Precious Pets Adoption League

Precious Pets Adoption League URGENTLY NEEDS YOUR DONATIONS!

Due to circumstances of many veterinary emergencies last summer, we are facing ENORMOUS vet bills! Our situation is dire. We rely solely on public donations and adoption fees to pay for our existence and rescues. In this ever worsening economy, MORE ANIMALS THAN EVER NEED OUR HELP!! Please be generous!!! YOU CAN SAVE A PRECIOUS LIFE! Your donation can be sent to the address listed in the Contact Us section or accepted in person at PETCO by Lakeside Mall during Precious Pets adoption show (check below for dates). Your donations are tax deductible. Thank you!

Last year, Amy was celebrating her 40th birthday.
She invited friends for party and asked for gifts that she could donate to an animal rescue organization. What a GREAT IDEA! If 10% of the people celebrating birthdays in the Detroit Metro Area donated money to rescue organizations in place of buying some gifts then there would be:

400,000 people * $200.00 = $80,000,000.00

This amount could pay for spay/neuter and vaccinations of 640,000 animals every year !!! WOW !!!
Can we do it ??? Yes we can !!! Please help rescue organizations !!!

Duke's Story

Hi! My name is Duke, although that hasn't always been the case . . .

When I was first brought to PPAL, the PPAL people were told that I was pregnant. Since I was pregnant, I was given to foster parents who have experience dealing with pregnant cats. The first thing my foster parents did was give me a name -- Daisy. The next thing they did was take me to the vet to get me examined. The vet did something called an ultrasound and confirmed that yes indeed, I was pregnant and due in 2-3 weeks. He told my foster parents that they should start feeding me kitten food so I would be getting enough nutrients to feed the kittens in my tummy. This didn't make any sense to me, but I sure did like getting all of that yummy kitten food!

After about 3 weeks of eating some of the most delicious food I've ever had, my foster parents got worried that I didn't have babies yet, even though my tummy was getting bigger by the day! They took me back to the doctor's office to make sure I was OK. After the doctor did another one of those ultrasound things, he told my foster parents that I wasn't pregnant! They were so surprised! They think my tummy was getting bigger because I was eating the kitten food. Personally, I don't think my tummy is really that big at all, but that's another story.

Since I wasn't pregnant, a week later my foster daddy took me back to the doctor's office to get me fixed. This surprised me, because I didn't even realize I was broken! But I went along with it anyway. All I know is that I stayed overnight at the doctor's office and some doctors and nurses poked around on me a little bit, but they didn't do much else. The next thing I knew, my foster-daddy came back to pick me up. I don't know exactly why that happened, but I remember my foster-daddy calling my foster-mommy and saying something like, "You're not going to believe this, but Daisy is already fixed."! (I knew I wasn't broken.) Then he said to her, "Oh, it gets better . . . Daisy is a BOY!" I don't know why everyone was so surprised to hear this. I knew all along that I was a boy. All they had to do was ask me. I was kind of thrown off by the pregnant thing, but figured that maybe it was OK for boys to have babies now, and if that meant eating all of the kitten food I wanted, that was fine by me.

When I got back to my foster-home, my name was immediately changed to Duke (something about Daisy-Duke that I don't really understand).

So that's my story and I'm sticking to it. I thought that maybe if you knew my story you'd think I was interesting and you would invite me to live with you in a forever home. My foster mommy and daddy always tell me that I'm a good boy and they call me a "lover kitty" whatever that means. My foster-mommy has long claws and she uses them to scratch my belly. I love when she does that. I also hear them talking about me being a cool cat. I do know what that means and it makes me proud.

So, if you have place in your heart and in your home for a good, cool, lover kitty, then I'm your man!

Flo and Niki

We are taking care of other adult cats. For example see posting of Flo (left) and Niki (right) were found outside of an apartment building. The person that found them speculated that the original owner of the cats lived at the apartment complex and just abandoned the cats when he or she moved out. Niki is a little shy at first, but warms up once she gets to know you. She is friendly and just wants to be with you.

For US all lives are PRECIOUS!

If you feel the same here is what you can do to help, consider adopting an animal in distress and donate your time and/or money, big and small, to make difference in cases such as this. Please note that Precious Pets Adoption League exists solely from donations. We do not receive any State or Federal funding. Donations are tax deductible.

PLEASE SPAY YOUR CAT or DOG!!!
Sad to say, this type of cancer, could have been prevented, had Abby been spayed when she was a young dog. The cost of a spay/neuter procedure is affordable and will make your companion friend happy and safe for life!

Pit Bulls

Why Pit Bulls in rescue deserve a second chance at life.

In recent years, Pit Bulls have gotten a bad rap in the media. We choose to rescue and adopt out Pit Bulls, because most of them are wonderful dogs.

For example Candi is a small Pit Bull. Despite being neglected, Candi is a very sweet and lovable dog that would be fine with children. She is also good with other dogs. She is still available for adoption .
Unfortunately, Pit Bulls are often victimized twice—first, at the hands of their original owners who neglect or abuse them, and then dump them, and second, they are passed up by potential adopters because of the bad [and undeserved] reputation of the breed.
Since Precious Pets Adoption League was formed, we have rescued and adopted out many Pit Bulls, including mature adult Pit Bulls that were found as strays. Pit Bulls as a breed are very loving of people, and are typically very tolerant (i.e., of a child stepping on them or pulling on their tails)—this is why most veterinarians and vet techs like handling Pit Bulls. The issues that have been associated with the breed have to do with them being popular with the wrong people, who neglect and/or abuse their dogs—the number of abused and neglected strays we have adopted out that were great dogs despite their background, is proof that Pit Bulls as a breed are good dogs.
Like any other breed, Pit Bulls have their advantages and drawbacks. We suggest that potential dog adopters take some time to get acquainted with puppies and dogs they are interested in adopting, and ask the rescue group volunteers what dog would be the best match for them. If you are interested in a particular dog, please call or email us [see Contact Us section], and if you are interested in learning more about Pit Bull Terriers, we suggest you go to the Pit Bull Rescue Central website.

Injured Snickers

At the end of February 2008 we rescued this Snowshoe with a head injury needing urgent veterinary care. Chris and Julie are fostering Snickers, giving him all the care and needed attention.

March-18-2008 update:

"From the first second we had Snickers, it was easy to see that he was a total lover-kitty. He loved to be held and snuggled but even more than that, he loves treats! He can hear the treat bag being opened from two rooms away, and as soon as he hears it, he comes tearing into the room! When Snickers first came to us, he had a wound on the top of his head.Because of Snickers' loving nature the wound wouldn't heal since he kept rubbing his whole body and head up against us to show us love. As a result, we took Snickers' to the clinic where his wound was stitched. His eyelid still has a little bit of healing, but his stitches were recently removed and Snickers is even more lovable than ever.
Snickers is definetly "people's cat"."

June-28-2008 update:
Snicker found forever home! We are very happy!

Minnie Has Now New Future

At the end of March 2008 Precious Pets Adoption League rescued Minnie from shelter. She was 'plump' and we thought we are rescuing a pregnant female. But it wasn't the case. Minnie was very sick. She had mammal tumors that needed to be removed ASAP. We scheduled the operation and spaying within a week.

April-10-2008 Update
Minnie, although now better has her share of problems: "They had to insert a drainage tube because she chewed it out. She also chewed out her stitches."

April-15-2008 Update:
Minnie was released from the hospital with handful of medications. She will be wearing a plastic cone to protect the stitches. Beth will help her to recover at home.

April-17-2008 Update:
Minnie had her drainage tube removed yesterday. The Doctor said that the stitches can be removed next week. She will need to be fostered for a couple more weeks before she could be adopted out. Otherwise, Minnie is doing very well and she is very happy.

May-10-2008 Update:
Minnie fould new home!!! Our Adoption League is very proud from saving such good dog!

Misty and her Kittens

March 2008: Precious Pets Adoption League accepted gray/white pregnant female kitty.
The lady that surrendered the cat couldn't assist the "expecting" female so she was looking for a rescue group to help. We call her - Greyheart - she said. Karrie took the new kitty under her fostering wings and changed her name to Misty.

April-07-2008 is the day when Spring has sprung in Karrie's home.
We got an exciting email from Karrie sharing the good news:

"Finally, after a week of having heavy contractions! The vet was right on the money with his prediction- four kittens and only two days before her "said" due date. Misty held in as best she could during labor. She had a very difficult time as the first one was breech! I helped her with that one and the next was hard as well, but afterwards was a lot easier and she was glad to finally be able to rest when it was all over. She purred proudly while her newborn babies suckled. She has been a great mommy and cares for them very well. Her babies are beautiful and my wish for an all-gray kitten came true! But she is just not gray, but silvery-gray like her mommy's fur! She also had a black and white tuxedo, a black kitten with white spots on his underside, and what I call a 'moo cow'."

April-10-2008 unbelievable update from Karrie:

You will never believe this!!

As most of you know, Misty's former name was Greyheart. I wasn't thrilled with that name and changed it. This morning when I checked on the kittens, you won't believe what I saw.

The all-gray kitten grew a heart!
On her chest!

Meet the true Greyheart (or Greyheart Jr.? lol).
That wasn't there before!!! I hope the heart stays and she doesn't grow anymore white on her. I mean, how cool is this!!

May-09-2008 update:
At the beginning of May 2008 Precious Pets Adoption League rescued 3 kittens left in a box on steps of an office building. When we picked them up we realized that they are very young, 4 -5 weeks old, and they urgently needed mommy cat to feed them and take care of them. Misty came right away into our minds. One week later we are happy to receive an update from Karrie on their progress:

"The kittens are all doing good. The [three] new kittens that Misty has taken on [adopted] as her own are gaining weight and doing very well. The story of Misty the Momma keeps getting sweeter and sweeter as I have never seen anything like this before- how Misty has taken to these 3 new kittens as her own flesh and blood and how they think she is their mommy. They are so content and happy now with having a mommy and they have been nursing from her just fine! Giving them this chance at having a mother is exactly what they needed. Everyone stays in my bedroom now, as before Misty and the babies were in my living room. I don't keep the kittens caged anymore either as they are older now. When they stray too far off, Misty will walk around calling them to make sure they come and stay nearby. Well, the 3 new kittens respond to that just like the others and will come to their "mommy" and follow her back into my room. It is just too cute! It is like these 3 belonged the whole time. "

Abby's Last Second Rescue

One of the dog rescue groups found this little sick Chihuahua-Beagle dog in a shelter but they could not rescue the dog because they didn't have a foster home available. Only hours were left before the little dog was scheduled to be euthanized. The group was searching desperately for available space in other groups. Gina, the Precious Pets President, received the call during adoption show January 19, 2008. She was asked to rescue older small dog with a breast tumor. This very sweet dog's life was depending on a decision that Gina, was about to make...

"YES, WE WILL TAKE HER!" was the answer.

Beth, who just started to volunteer with Precious Pets Adoption League, went to the shelter and took Abby home. Abby was very happy for the first two days then started to show signs of depression. In a few days Doctor Wilson examined Abby and recommended an operation to remove the breast lump. This was the only way to help Abby. Gina decided that a shortage of money can not stand in the way of this rescue. The operation will be done!
Doctor Wilson had an opening in his schedule so Abby was operated on shortly after. During the operation the Doctor removed several tumors and sent sample tissue to test for cancer. Otherwise, Abby's operation went well, she was also spayed. The spay, at this late in life, was to prevent hormone production, suspected to be the cause of tumors development. With a lot of TLC the dog started to slowly recover from the operation and her sicknesses.

Sadly, the biopsy report was positive for CANCER...

Beth and her family decided to give Abby the love, the care and the home for as long as it will be needed.

In a few days we received a good news from the veterinary clinic: the second retest came back NEGATIVE for cancer!!! At this point the prognoses were good, but the cancer could come back.
Since Abby's new family can't afford the medical expenses Precious Pets Adoption League committed to provide medical care for Abby now and in the feature.

UPDATE from Beth, February 04, 2008
"Abby is doing great!!!! She is happy and very well adjusted to her new home. In fact she is the Queen of her new castle. She lets us know what she wants and we happily obey. lol She has gained some weight and runs around like she's a puppy. I think she knows she is loved and cared for. We are very fortunate to have Abby in our lives and hope we can make the rest of her life as happy as she has made us. Thank you!!!"

Please help us to pay for the medical bills in this heart breaking case. Abby's medical expenses have reached
$412
and we will need to set aside more money for any medical needs that may arise in the future.

Rescue of Baby

Christmas and New Year without miracles?
Not if Precious Pets Adoption League can help!

Before Christmas 2007, we received a call from a lady, Maggie, who found a 4 month old kitten “Baby” outside her apartment. She took the kitten home and fed him. Soon she noticed that the kitten had some major problem with his back leg. She couldn't pay for a veterinarian examination and X-rays because she did not have any income. Her friend committed to pay for food and litter for the kitten, but he could not afford the veterinarian expense either. They decided to call rescue groups in the Sterling Heights area to see if any help was available. Gina, the PPAL president, offered to look over the cat and see if their worries were substantiated. When we saw the kitten, it was clear that we did not have the expertise to determine whether the kitten had been injured or was born with a deformed leg. We realized that professional help was needed. The kitten was shivering when we examined his leg, which means that he could be in a lot of pain. Gina without any contemplation said:

“we will help with what we can... we will get the cat to the veterinarian for an examination, a deworming, and X-rays to see what is wrong. Later, we may also be able to help with the neutering”.

We couldn't just say 'sorry' and let Maggie go home without providing any help for the kitten. Precious Pets Adoption League does not have many financial resources to offer, but we did it anyway. If anybody reading this heart touching story can help, please do. The injured kitten needs an operation that we would not be able to pay for. And for proper health maintenance the kitten will also need to be tested for FIV / FeLV and get vaccinations like RCP and Rabies.

Only donations from the public can help in this case.
Please donate and be part of accomplishing miracles!

Dec-21-2007 Update:
Baby was seen by our veterinarian, the FIV/FeLV combo test was negative, he was vaccinated and dewormed . The diagnosis is that he has a complete fracture of the thighbone. Two disconnected pieces! He must have quite a bit of pain. Baby was referred to Doctor Wilson to do the surgery. He probably will put a rod down through the marrow. The doctor may have him neutered at the same time.

Dec-26-2007 Update:
Doctor Wilson told us that the injury was very severe, and older than we thought originally. He said there was a lot of scar tissue that had formed. He said it may be worse when he opens the leg. He may have to attach a metal rod, or if that does not work, he will have to amputate the leg. He said the kitten had a lot of pain (what we feared all along). Baby might have been only a few weeks old when this happened. We felt from the start, that this could be real bad. Doctor Wilson is going to take Baby out to his other Hospital. He may operate on him tonight. We pray that he doesn't have to amputate that leg. That little kitten doesn't deserve any more pain!

Dec-28-2007 Update:
Baby was operated and came home last night. Maggie pick up the kitten greatly relieved. Baby had a 3 inch scar, and fully shaved leg. He had a bracket placed inside his leg. But NO amputation! Maggie said that the kitten was moving around quite a bit.

Dec-31-2007 Update:
Sheila, our dedicated foster, helped Maggie to confine Baby so the injured leg heals properly. Here is the update from her:
"Yesterday, I spent most of the day at Maggie's apartment. After hearing that "Baby" could still lose his leg, if not properly confined, I raced off to store to buy the grid for a cage for him. Baby looked pretty out of it. He is on pain medication and Clavamox. His little leg looked pretty much as expected. The 3 inch incision seems to be healing nicely. His leg is completely stiff, I would guess from trauma and swelling. The whole leg had been shaved for the surgery, and front leg also, for the I.V. Once I got the cage built, he looked comfortable, in the bed I provided. Sweet angel kitten. I hope he is truly on the mend! He has a January 7, 2008 follow-up appointment."

Jan-09-2008 Update:
Past Monday the Doctor Wilson examined Baby, and declared that everything looked pretty good. He removed the stitches, but was unable to do more that day. Maggie had to make another appointment to do another xray, and to get his booster vaccinations.

Feb-02-2008 Update:
Maggie called and told us that Baby was taken for a checkup and X-ray of his healing leg. The Doctor said that he is doing very well. The kitten is happy again, playing without pain!

The medical bills for Baby are over $1,200.00!

If you would like to help us please see the Contact Us section for the address where to send donations.

March-10-2008 Update:
Sheila visited Maggie and Baby. The kitty is doing very well, he walks almost without a visible limping. He is playful and very loving.
And thats not all...
Baby's kitty brother, that was also living outside the apartment complex during this cold winter, became part of the family. He was neutered and given necessary shots with the help of Maggie's friend.

Samantha's Story

In December 2006, this hapless kitten, alone and hungry, wandering the farming community in Richmond, MI, got the attention of a woman severely allergic to cats. An animal lover above all, she rescued the kitten. She took it to a local veterinary clinic to have it leukemia tested, wormed, and treated for ear mites and a severe flea infestation. The kitten was almost bald in some spots, trying to "lick" the fleas away. Due to the woman's allergies, she was unable to bring the kitten into her home. As best she could, she made the kitten comfortable in her barn. For three weeks she tried to find a home for the kitten. She started to worry, as winter was here and the barn was very cold. She posted a note at a pet supply store.
One of Precious Pets Adoption League's foster moms saw the note and called to rescue the kitten and find it a good home. The woman was reluctant at first to surrender the kitten to someone she never met. After careful scrutiny, she did what was best for the kitten, and brought it to the new "foster mom". The rescuer promised to follow up on veterinary care and vaccinations, as well as, to have the kitten spayed before she was put up for adoption. Samantha is a lucky girl. She found the right person to take care of her. She is a beautiful, healthy, black and white Tuxedo, about 10-12 months old (as of 4/15/2007). She has taken the heart of every one at Precious Pets, because of her beauty, playfulness, and sweet disposition. She is currently available for someone to care for her and love her as we do.

March 05, 2008 update:
Samantha found good home, first meeting with her new 'daddy' "...looked like love at first sight! ". We are so happy!

Mandy's Rescue

Please read this heart warming story. Here is how miracles happen.

December 2007: Mandy was found on a person's porch. The person that found her lives in a rural area where there are only a handful of neighbors that live anywhere nearby--he checked with his neighbors, but none of them were missing a cat. While Mandy was in fairly good condition when she was found, it appears that she was deliberately abandoned. Mandy is front declawed (note that declawed cats should never be allowed outdoors anyway, since they have no front nails to defend themselves). Precious Pets Adoption League was contacted to by the family member in hope of finding for Mandy new loving family and a warm home that she deserves.
Week later a lady decided to stop at PETCO. She had to meet someone shortly and she had only few minutes to look at the cats on display. She said that she lost her husband about 18 months ago and now she is ready to find a companion pet. Mandy was curled up and we did not wanted to disturb her too much. But soonest the lady petted Mandy the kitty started to purr. The bonding was instantaneous, Mandy was adopted in next few minutes!
We thank very much the family who saved Mandy from the freezing weather and hunger. And we appreciate the generous donation to our organization in recognition of the important work that we do to save lives of homeless animals in distress.

Magic and Mr Binks

This is another miracle that has happened thanks to Gina's watchful eye and love for animals.

In May 2007, when the Detroit ZOO adoption event was coming to an end, some groups desperately tried to find other rescue leagues to take animals that they could no longer shelter. Even though Precious Pets Adoption League had not adopted out many animals that weekend, Gina the PPAL president, decided to rescue one or two of these 'unwanted' cats. She selected Magic (mom) and Mr. Binks (son), two wonderful and very friendly black cats.

December 15, 2007 update:
We are pleased to tell you that these two cats have been adopted by the fostering family.

Tinker and Kittens

In May 2007, when the Detroit ZOO adoption event was coming to an end, some groups desperately tried to find other rescue leagues to take animals that they could no longer shelter. Gina, the PPAL president, after decided to rescue two black cats was still looking around cages. AND there was Tinker, a tiger female begging for love with her beautiful eyes and loud purring. Gina just could not ignore such a precious cat. She took the cat home and made an appointment for spaying. Two days before the procedure, Tinker started showing symptoms of pregnancy. Instead of spaying Tinker, we took her to the veterinarian for an examination and the doctor confirmed the pregnancy. We had no idea when to expect the kittens. Several weeks passed and on June 30, 2007, Gina woke up to find these 7 little kittens, nursing from Tinker.

Isn't this a miracle?

All of us at Precious Pets Adoption League had tears in our eyes when hearing this good news.
August 18, 2007 update: the kittens have been adopted to good homes and Tinker will be ready for adoption after spaying.
December 01, 2007 update: we are please to tell you that we adopted out Tinker. She has a new loving family, and the company of other cats.

Harnas Wildlife Foundation in Namibia

I volunteered at Harnas Wildlife Foundation in Namibia which is located in southwestern Africa in February of 2008. The working guest program allows working guests to prepare food and feed the animals, walk some of the animals, clean enclosures and do other odd jobs required on the farm. The animals on the farm are leopards, cheetahs, lions, meerkats, caracals, African wild dogs, monkeys and baboons. Harnas is a charitable organization that takes in orphaned, injured or 'nuisance animals' in the area. The farm operates on the funds received from the working guest program and donations. The farm is on 24,710 acres of grassland and desert where the animals are placed in 'soft release' when possible in large enclosures.
My experiences at Harnas will never be forgotten. I was able to sleep in the leopard cubs enclosure many nights where Lost, the leopard, would sleep beside me or in my sleeping bag all night long. Lost came to Harnas in the Fall of 2007 at 1 month old. Her mother had been shot by a farmer. She was bottle fed and is now a very healthy and happy leopard cub.
Another experience was sleeping in the enclosure of two cheetahs, Cleo and Pride. Pride came to the farm as an orphan at about a month old as did Cleo. The two are very affectionate and love night time companionship. They prefer to sleep on the sleeping bag either beside of you or on top of you. The only danger was having your skin licked off with their sandpaper like tongues.

There were daily and weekly walks of some of the animals including two young male lions, Zion and Trust. Zion is a very affectionate lion while Trust is a very mischievous lion. The two lions have since become too large to take on walks. Many wildlife conservationists disagree with putting the large cats in enclosures. They believe there should be no human involvement. Unfortunately the animals come to the farm because of human interference and the farm takes them in and gives them a wonderful home to live out the rest of their lives. I am very proud to have been a part of this wonderful place and look forward to the day that I can return.

Success Stories

This section is about our successful adoptions. Thanks to our continuing effort hundreds of precious cats and dogs found new homes. We have made many people happy and thankful for the service that we provide. If you have adopted a pet from us and would like your story to appear in this section, please send us an email with your "success story" and a few pictures of your happy pet (downsized, if possible to 40-60 KBytes, about 350 x 230 pixels). You can also visit us in PETCO by Lakeside Mall and give us the story to 'publish' along with the photos; we are there almost every Saturday. As long as we have free space, we will add your story to this section for readers to enjoy.

Rescues That We Will Never Forget

Saving Bunu

In the end of February 2008, we rescued an older Himalayan cat, named Bunu by the foster parents Julie and Chris. The cat was sick, depressed, and in a great distress. His hair was matted to the point that the only way to help him was to shave the hair off. We took the first available appointment to see Doctor Wilson at Animal Clinic of Sterling Heights. The Doctor ordered a battery of tests to help with the diagnoses. Bunu was well cared for by Julie and Chris:

“ When we first got him he wouldn't leave his cage or clean himself. He got so bad that we took him to a groomer to be shaved. After he came home from the grooming (wearing nothing but a furry face and some boots!), he was like a whole new kitty! Now, he has to be coaxed back into his cage when he's out. As far as Bunu is concerned, there are just not enough laps in the world to sit on, or hugs to give. When we hold Bunu, he actually puts one front paw on each shoulder as if he's hugging us! After being shaved, we noticed a few small lumps under Bunu's skin. Thankfully they're nothing more than an infection, and the doctor say he will be fine.”

On March 19, 2008 Bunu went into a shock.
We had been praying for a miracle while Chris was rushing Bunu to the Animal Clinic... Doctor Wilson carefully reviewed the blood test results. We were shocked to hear the diagnoses. Bunu had Addison's disease, an extremely rare disease in cats.
“Hypoadrenocorticism, also called Addison's disease, is an endocrine disorder that results from a deficient production of adrenal gland hormones. ..”
The Doctor transported Bunu to his Veterinary Hospital to administer intravenous steroids treatment.

March-21-2008 Update:
Bunu's condition deteriorated within hours after being admitted to the hospital, everything possible was done...sadly we could not save him...

Please donate in the memory of Bunu to help us cover over $500 of veterinary bills!

A few of the rescues that we have undertaken in last few months (see Baby, Abby, Snickers stories) totally exhausted our finances and many of the veterinary bills remain unpaid. You can make a BIG difference!
